Notts So Good

The resurgence in Nomads season hit a stumbling block at Epsom on Sunday as they fell to defeat against Nottingham. Going into the game with a chance to take second spot in the league if victorious and a decent run of form behind them there was every reason to hope for further success.

The game started very evenly with early exchanges of goals between the two sides and a good contest emerging, Nomads were at one point 4-3 up but when that lead slipped it never returned. Two goals from Notts sent them 5-4 ahead before an Olds penalty levelled the game at 5-5, the duelling continued with Notts regaining the lead and Ean Irwin levelling for Nomads with a neat goal from under the Korf.

Then came the turning point in the game, the Nomads players suddenly finding themselves feeling sympathy for the Kingfishers players who visited Epsom a fortnight previously as their luck and shooting form deserted them whilst their opposition continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

Five goals without reply before half time put Nottingham in a near unnassailable position as Nomads shooting form seemed to have gone for a Sunday stroll on the Downs. Anywhere but where it was needed in the hall at least!

The second half began with Nottingham stretching their lead further to 6-12 before Irwin got the scoreboard moving for Nomads again.

It was not however to light the blue touch paper on a recovery as Nottingham, revelling in the goals of Rob Mann, Alistair Knight and Heather Ikwuemesi, extended their lead with four more goals before Sytze Bijker mustered a lone reply for Nomads.

Sensing the obvious need for a change, not so much motivated by individual failings but the sense that something needed to change for the scoring to return, Nomads made a double substitution.

Simon Cole made way for the looming stature of Alex Bell who was making his first team and HSKL debut and Jess Beale made her Nomads debut in place of Kim Jones.

Nottingham added two more their tally before Nomads finally returned fire with some vigour, Bijker, Irwin and Beale pulling the reds into double figures and the game to 11-18.

Two more in reply followed for Nottingham as they added further misery to Nomads day, Emma Cole then added a Nomads twelfth before an instant Notts reply, another for Olds and a final Notts goal to finish the game at 13-22.

The win put the visitors three points ahead of fourth place Nomads and reasonably secure of a play-off berth come the end of the season.

Nomads on the other hand will have to battle on, with Kingfishers, Bec and Kwiek all waiting to pounce on any further slip ups.

The first team next play on the 21st of February as they travel to play Mitcham and if the coming match up is even half as exciting as the last Nomads v Mitcham game we are in a for a stormer.

Nomads Break Norwich Duck

This game was always going to struggle to live up to the impressive nature of last weeks win over Kingfishers but it was an intriguing contest nonetheless.

A fractious first half opened with a missed penalty from Norwich before they opened the scoring, Nomads replied promptly though with Joe Olds and Emma Cole putting the home side back in the lead.

The game was then punctuated with a horrific scream of pain from Steve Green as his knee gave out when he leapt forward to defend, the game was delayed for a short while whilst the injury was assessed but Steve and Nomads will be hoping the injury is not as bad as first feared.

Simon Cole replaced Green and Nomads settled back into the game with Sytze Bijker and Joe Olds extending the lead to 4-1, Norwich Knights pulled one back to take the game to 4-2, Bijker then made it 5-2 before a good spell from Knights saw two quick goals bring them back to a goal behind.

Joe Olds sank his third goal to end the scoring for the half with the game poised at 6-4, Nomads were edging the game but not far enough ahead to feel comfortable against a Knights side who were harrying and making it difficult for the reds to hit any sort of flow. A sustained period of good shooting would see them right back into the game.

The first goal of the second half was therefore crucial and it was Nomads who took first blood, with Sytze Bijker opening the lead to three goals, Knights replied to keep the pressure on before an Olds free pass dropped in the Korf to take it to 8-5.

Norwich then hit another good spell, scoring a penalty and then from open play despite some legitimate Nomads shouts for pushing through. At 8-7 Norwich had the chance to take the game on and regain the lead but the celebratory fist of Bijker was pumping the air again as he scored from long distance.

Olds then showed great composure to score two high pressure penalties and take the game to 11-7 and away from a Knights come back despite a last goal from a free pass to take it to 11-8.

Having played exceptionally well defending her towering opposition girl, Sam Rowbottom then curved in for a classic running in shot as Nomads ended the game building up some nice moves, Simon Cole then showed great awareness to pass out from the feed position to give Ana Osbourne the simplest of short shots to wrap up the scoring and the game at 13-8.

With no other HSKL game this weekend Nomads move onto 9 points and into fourth place on goal difference although they will have played one more fixture than other teams, the points are won and on the board.

The run of home games continues against Nottingham next weekend and a win and other results going our way could see Nomads sitting in second place in HSKL after Week 10's games.

Come on you reds!

Weekend News

Please note a change to the previously advertised throw offs for this weekends games.

The Firsts throw off against Norwich Knights at 13:00

The Seconds Throw off against Bec 3 at 11:15

Both games are at Epsom College. Noisy support welcomed as always from those not playing this weekend!

Also...

If you are playing in the Fifth team game against Supernova 3 you may not have been to the Pimlico Academy venue before.

Although the address is Pimlico Academy Sports Hall, Lupus Street, SW1V 3AT the entrance for the sports hall is actually around the back of the school on Chichester St.

It is a short walk from Pimlico tube (Victoria Line) or Vauxhall tube/rail and there should be no engineering works to impede your journey!

Fishcal Stimulus...

If there is a better way to boost the moral of a Korfball club after the icy gloom of postponed games and winter chill then i am yet to discover it!

Nomads chalked up a stunning winning margin of 12 goals and held Kingfishers to the lowest goals total for any team in so far the 09/10 Haven Sports Korfball League in a game that Nomads fans will hope provides a springboard for a successful 2010.

The result takes the reds up into fifth spot in the HSKL and by virtue of closing the gap with Kingfishers in fourth place, it hangs the tantalising carrot of a berth in the end of season play-offs if they can keep up the good form and pick up more wins.

Nomads started confidently with goals from Ana Osbourne and Steve Green giving the perfect two goal lead from first attack, Sytze Bijker then added a third before an uncharacteristic penalty miss from Sam Rowbottom.

Kingfishers picked up their opening goal and shortly after a Steve Green effort regained the three goal lead for Nomads.

Kingfisher returned fire to make it 4-2 and the game seemed to be settling into the usual close battle, with goals being traded back and forth and a tight finish...

Unfortunately, nobody had let the Nomads players in on the script and a prolonged period of intensity and shooting accuracy ensued as they fired in six goals without reply, a look at my notes shows the order of goals as Bijker, Irwin, Osbourne, Green, Bijker and Cole. A brilliant spell and one that can only bring confidence to the Nomads ranks.

10-2 to the good at half time, only a collapse of Angola v Mali standards would be able to take the two points away from Nomads but such collapses come when teams ease off or lose concentration and so the challenge faced in the second half was that of maintaining the intensity and focus and keeping the game well away from Kingfishers.

Although a win was almost certain given the size of the lead, a great win required a concerted effort to prevent Kingfishers from regaining ground.

The second half started with Joe Olds scoring an intelligent goal from under the Korf, Steve Green added another to his tally before two goals from Kingfishers brought the score to 13-4 and the game entered a stagnant period with Nomads failing for a short while add to their total, pushing slightly too hard and losing their natural flow.

Although Kingfishers had made changes to try and make an impact on the game, they continued to have a bad days shooting and without consistent goals they could not apply the pressure they needed to find a way back into the game.

The dry patch for Nomads soon ended with a further Steve Green goal and two more for Sytze bringing the lead above ten goals, Kingfishers replied with a lone goal before Olds and then Bijker took Nomads up to their final total of 18 and a final consolation goal from the visitors took them to a hugely disappointing 6 goals.

A great result and with bottom side Norwich Knights next to visit Epsom another performance of this calibre will give Nomads a great chance to take their unbeaten home record to a fourth game.
