Solid Season For Seconds

A middling season for the Second team, going up against the usual suspects and the First teams of Highbury and Croydon was always going to make for an interesting season.

Going up against two clubs looking for promotion to the HSKL rather than simply HSKL reserve sides as was the case last time the Reds were a National League side.

The campaign started well with a 12-8 win over Mitcham 2 before the depth of Trojans squad overwhelmed the Reds 19-9, Rob Williams hitting six.

A 10-7 win over Bec 3 followed before another crushing defeat, this time to Highbury who ran out 16-3 winners against a weakened Nomads side Arctic conditions at Score.

Nomads were back to full strength for the visit of Bec 2 and the 14-14 draw meant Nomads 2 were the only side to take points off the eventual London Regional League winners.

A 16-12 defeat to Croydon 1 followed before a three game winning streak, first Bec 3 were dispatched 21-10 and then Croydon 2 highlighted the dramatic drop in quality outside their first choice side by being on the receiving end of 18-3 and 18-4 wins for Nomads 2.

Mitcham then gained revenge for their opening day defeat, winning 12-10 and Highbury picked up a double over the reds with a 14-8 win at Epsom.

Trojans 2 were then squeezed out 9-8 in a battle that was notable for an impressive performance from veteran Gary Olds, covering for injury but still capable of having an impact at this level.

The season arguably peaked for Nomads as they ended the play-off hopes of rivals Croydon 1 with an 18-7 win courtesy of some ice cool penalty taking from top scorer Alex Bell and his younger brother Ollie as they weighed in with six penalties and five open play goals between them to help vanquish Croydon's hopes.

The season ended on a bizarre anti-climax though as minutes after the Firsts had secured a top four spot by defeating Bec's Firsts, the seconds had to take on the leagues top side and they were comfortably beaten 16-8.

Despite that last day defeat, the midweek heroics over Croydon were to secure fourth place and a pleasing season for the Seconds.

London 2 Season Review

Nomads 3

Final Placing: 1st

Top Male Goalscorer: Ian Borrows (42)
Top Female Goalscorer: Kate Hotton (12)

Thirds Storm To Victory

A fine season for the Thirds as, boosted by the goals of the talismanic Ian Borrows, they stormed to the London 2 Championship after a wobbly start.

Three defeats in four at the start of the season is not the form of Champions but with Terry Forde drafted in to coach the side on matchdays and lessons learnt from defeat the Thirds went from strength to strength.

After the three early defeats, the season became an unbeaten run of 9 games where no side managed to hit double figures against a stoic and resolute defence and only Higbury took points with the 8-8 draw in the last game.

The season was notable as an example of the benefit of more organsation for the lower sides and with the side drawing players from above and below the consistent results were impressive.

Third Team Moment of the Season

I can't chose between Ian's six goal hauls, the Rivers family booking fiasco, the permanent smile on Helen Grinyers face when playing or catching the bewildered look on a defenders face when Kate Hotton ghosted past for a runner and it would be unfair to single one out as each had their own unique charm!

Final Placing: 2nd

Fourths Mount Impressive Recovery

Another Nomads side that started badly (4 defeats in the first 5 games) but ended the season emphatically with five wins in a row and with 8 goals the narrowest winning margin in those fixtures they have a great chance of challenging for the title next season.

Fourth Team Moment of the Season

Again, a tough call, there was Carole Dillon's six goal haul in the Monday night game that no doubt catapulted her back into the first team that weekend or Andy Stockwell thumping 8 goals past a Trojans side playing short but with an England international in their ranks.

Mixed Results For Lower Sides

A merged review because of the overlap of players between sides.

The Fifths had the better season, as would be expected, starting strongly with wins over both Supernova and Croydon's Fourths and drawing 5-5 with Bec 5 before falling to a heavy defeat against Supernova Thirds who had settled on the line up that was to comfortable win them the league.

A default victory over Woking 2 followed before defeat to Nomads 6 (it possibly would have been an idea to ask what team was what before the game) and another default win in the return match against the Sixths. A 6-6 draw with Supernova followed before defeat to Woking 2 and Bec 5 but the season ended on a high with a 9-8 win over Croydon in a fantastic contest that had multiple changes of leads.

The Sixths season was not as successful in terms of points, serving as it does as a melting pot for learning the game rather than fielding the strongest side but the team still had three wins and a draw to show for their season.

A 9-4 victory over Croydon, an 11-6 win over Supernova 4, the win over ourselves and the opening day 4-4 draw with Woking 2 All said though, a pleasing season for both sides with enough highlights to go round and everybody scored a few goals so it's all good!

Fifth & Sixth Team Moment of the Season

Has to be the celebration after Claudia scored her first goal. Nothing else quite encapsulated the simple joy of throwing a Korfball through a Korf quite so well!

What time is it? Nomads time!

Bec 9 Nomads 15

Nomads justified the two years of effort since their relegation from the National League today by guaranteeing at least fourth spot in the HSKL in their first season back in English Korfball's top flight with an assured performance in the most testing of circumstances.

The game started nervously with some loose passes and a couple of shots blocked through sharp defending, it was Bec who took the lead though, first with a runner and then with long shot from behind the basket.

Any worries that this would be a vital toehold in the game for Bec were soon dashed through some great invention from Nomads' Dutch import, Sytze Bijker, as he picked up two goals from right under the basket to level the game 2-2.

Nomads then took the lead for themselves, Joe Olds notching his first with a well worked free pass, it didn't last long though as another Bec runner levelled the scores at 3-3.

Sam Rowbottom than made her contribution to the scoreboard with a runner of her own.

Bec again levelled with a long shot but Nomads were about to hit their stride with only a few minutes before half time, those in the crowd were hoping to grab a goal to go in with a moral boosting half time lead.

The Nomads players however decided that three goals would be a far better idea and took the half time score to 7-4

Joe Olds began the mini-rout with a long shot before Ana Osbourne proved that despite talk of retirement, she still very much has it with a long shot.

There was still time for Sytze Bijker to rack up his third of the game with a textbook drop off shot and with that burst of scoring the hands on the clock of play-off destiny had swung away from Bec time and towards Nomads time.

Shortly before half time Kim Jones made way for Carole Dillon.

Bec came out for the second half needing to hit Nomads hard to get back into the game, they did manage the first goal of the half but Nomads soon restored the advantage with a Joe Olds penalty.

Nomads then had a second penalty and a chance to extend the lead but Joe Olds missed to the surprise of many and when Bec then scored from long to take the score to 8-6 the Bec faithful may have seen an opening to get back into the game.

Bijker though, had other ideas and he continued a fine days Korfball with a free pass and then a superbly worked drop off goal with Sam Rowbottom and Ean Irwin improvising their passes brilliantly to get the ball out to Sytze who was not going to miss.

Bec then pulled a goal back from long distance before an Olds runner was disallowed for cutting.

Ana Osbourne again had the better of her player when she pivoted around from the feed position to score with a classic Korfball trick.

Ean Irwin then joined the party as Nomads ticked the clock further towards Nomads time, scoring twice from long to take the score to 13-7.

Olds missed another penalty but it was to have little impact on the result.

Simon Cole then added a score of his own to put Nomads on 14 goals.

Bec scored from medium distance but Sytze Bijker stuck away a penalty to take the Nomads total to 15 goals, Bec hit the Korf one last time but at 15-9 they were well beaten and on the day the clocks went forward, the time was very much Nomads time!

Bec will of course rue their two 12-13 defeats against Trojans and Mitcham, victories in those games would have made this game a mere warm up for their play-off campaign but that is the beauty of Korfball, you can be on the brink of glory one minute and staring defeat in the face the next.

Nomads though, with a guaranteed fourth spot can already call their season a great success and a fine justification of the club regrouping and uniting as one to take the club back to it's place at the top level of English Korfball.

There is plenty to be proud about and hopefully even more to come...

COME ON YOU REDS!

Bell Tolls For Croydon...

Nomads ended Croydon's hopes of qualifying for the Champions Trophy last night with an 18-17 win that gave the play-off spot to Highbury, they will still have to overcome Tornadoes for a place in the Trophy but Croydon will be disappointed to lose out after such a close defeat to their old rivals in red.

The game was notable for a large percentage of goals coming from the penalty spot, with Ollie & Alex Bell dispatching every Nomads penalty.

More goalscorer detail to follow.
