What Is Korfball?

The best way to get a grasp of the game is to watch it being played, the premise is simple, the ball must be shot through the Korf, do this more times than your opponents and you win.

This video shows a top level club game played to a very high standard, it should give you an idea of what Korfball is without having to understand too much of the rules. The essence of the sport is the simplicity.

Korfball is the only true mixed gender team sport, the rules dictate that male and female players have equal roles in the game.

Consequently the game of Korfball can only be played with mixed teams, making it unique in the world of sport. Other games adapt to mixed gender teams, Korfball is a mixed gender team sport.

A team consists of four male and four female players and as you can see in the video, one group of two male and two female players attack, the other defends, after two goals are scored, the roles rotate.

Evasion

You cannot score when your player is defending you, this is when a raised arm of a defender is between you and the post and within arms reach, therefore to score legally you must be free of your marker.

A top korfballer is a great defender and a great attacker.

Some will learn to specialise in long shooting, or rebounding (Trying to win the ball after a missed shot) or high pressure defending but every player must be competent in every role.

Total Football made the Dutch famous around the world but Korfball, their National Sport, is Total Sport.

The ultimate sporting challenge of all round ability in every position.

Speed

The video also shows that Korfball is a fast paced basket sport based on passing the ball around the team to allow a player to evade the marking of their opponent by breaking clear of their defensive reach in order to shoot into the Korf and score a goal.

The manoeuvres and skills required for any evasion attempt to be successful requires varied movements, at speed, executed with fine control and skill.

To grasp the concept of Korfball and begin playing is simple, to become a top player requires talent, motivation and practice.

A Club For All

Nomads have teams at every level, from Junior to Senior with our six adult teams beginning at the lowest level in London and finishing with the first team who regularly compete at the top level in the UK and Europe.

From beginners to those who started at school and University to top level players, Nomads has the team to play in and the players and coaches to help you enjoy and succeed in this great sport.

Where?

The indoor season runs from October to around March/April. This is the main season where the permanent leagues are run and when European Club competition occurs.

For this we base ourselves at Epsom College and their Sports Hall when playing home games on a Sunday and this is also where Wednesday night training for the Squad (First and Second team) is held.

It can be reached easily by car and is walkable in around 15-20minutes from the centre of Epsom and therefore Epsom train station.

Although the Sports Hall can be accessed from both entrances the Longdown Lane South entrance provides the shortest route to the hall.

Club training is run on Monday nights at Sutton Grammar School. Squad players also participate in these sessions and we maintain a strong club ethos.

Those who play in our lowest team train, learn and socialise with our top players, Junior sessions run before the Adult sessions so that during the season the whole club comes together to train.

Sutton Grammar is located in the centre of Sutton, easily reached on Buses, Trains and on the road.

It is worth mentioning that access to the Sports Hall is only available from the Greyhound Road side of the school. The front entrance will be closed outside school hours.
